The picks

01

★Smallest

GarminDash Cam Mini 2

Best for: A hidden front camera

A key-sized front dash cam recording 1080p at 30 fps with a 140-degree field of view, at 32.1 g.

What we like

  • Smallest here
  • Voice control (per Garmin)

Watch out for

  • No GPS
  • 1080p only

Garmin lists 1080p at 30 fps, a 140-degree view and 32.1 g. It has no screen and no GPS, so it hides behind the mirror.

02

★Best front cam with GPS

GarminDash Cam 57

Best for: Sharper front video with GPS

A compact front dash cam recording 1440p with a 140-degree field of view and built-in GPS.

What we like

  • Built-in GPS
  • Higher resolution than the Mini 2

Watch out for

  • Front only
  • Heavier than the Mini 2

The 57 steps up to 1440p with the same 140-degree view and adds GPS and a 2 in display. Garmin lists 60.5 g.

03

★Best full coverage

VantrueN4 Pro

Best for: Front, cabin and rear coverage

A three-channel dash cam: 4K front, 1080p cabin and 1080p rear, with a supercapacitor rated for -20 to 60°C.

What we like

  • Three cameras
  • Supercapacitor, -20 to 60°C

Watch out for

  • Larger install job
  • Rear cable to route

Vantrue lists a 4K front camera at 30 fps plus 1080p cabin and rear cameras, with 158, 160 and 165 degree views. It uses a supercapacitor rated for -20 to 60°C. Expect to route a cable to the rear window.

How to choose

  • Front only or more? Rideshare drivers often want a cabin camera. Most drivers start with the front.
  • Check local law. Some states limit what can be mounted on a windshield.
  • Pair it with a good card. Use the memory card type the maker recommends.

Keep an emergency kit in the car too.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need GPS in a dash cam?

GPS adds location and speed to footage. Garmin lists GPS on the Dash Cam 57 and not on the Mini 2.

What is a 3-channel dash cam?

It records the road ahead, the cabin and the rear at once. The Vantrue N4 Pro has front, cabin and rear cameras.

Why a supercapacitor?

Vantrue uses a supercapacitor in the N4 Pro and rates it for -20 to 60°C, which suits hot parked cars.
