The picks

01

★Simplest

FIXDSensor

Best for: Plain-English alerts for most drivers

A Bluetooth OBD2 sensor with a free app that translates 7,000+ codes, shows severity and sends maintenance reminders.

What we like

  • Severity ratings in plain English
  • Maintenance reminders

Watch out for

  • Diesel support not guaranteed

FIXD says its app translates 7,000+ codes, rates severity and sends maintenance reminders. Its US coverage is gas and hybrid 1996+, with diesel 2008+ not guaranteed.

02

★Best for enhanced codes

BlueDriverPro Scan Tool

Best for: Enhanced codes beyond the engine

A Bluetooth OBD2 sensor for 1996+ North American gas, diesel and hybrid vehicles that reads engine codes plus ABS, SRS, transmission and TPMS on supported vehicles.

What we like

  • Enhanced system codes
  • Diesel and hybrid coverage

Watch out for

  • Enhanced codes vary by vehicle

BlueDriver covers 1996+ North American gas, diesel and hybrid vehicles. Beyond engine codes it lists ABS, SRS, transmission and TPMS where the vehicle supports them.

03

★Best for battery checks

InnovaCarScan Advisor 5210

Best for: Battery checks and live-data graphs

A Bluetooth and Wi-Fi OBD2 tool that reads and erases engine and ABS codes, graphs live data and runs battery and alternator tests.

What we like

  • Battery and alternator tests
  • SMOG and drive-cycle check
  • Oil reset

Watch out for

  • Needs RepairSolutions 2 app

Innova lists engine and ABS codes, live data with graphs and recording, battery and alternator tests, a SMOG and drive-cycle check and oil reset, through its RepairSolutions 2 app.

How to choose

  • Run the maker’s vehicle lookup before you buy.
  • Decide how deep you go. Engine codes cover most check engine lights.
  • Use it with care. A blinking check engine light needs prompt repair. See our guide.

Frequently asked questions

Will an OBD2 scanner work on my car?

EPA says all 1996 and newer light-duty cars and trucks have OBD. Each maker also lists its own coverage, so check its lookup tool.

Can a scanner clear the check engine light?

BlueDriver and Innova list reading and clearing codes. Clearing a code does not fix the cause.

Which one reads ABS and airbag codes?

BlueDriver lists ABS, SRS, transmission and TPMS on supported vehicles. Innova lists ABS codes.
